The Life of a Volunteer
by brian.voortmanPOSTED Mar 12 2010So my job here is to help the Human Resources department. I will be coordinating volunteers and welcoming them when I pick them up from the airport. I am also responsible for care workers and their days off.
I spend a lot of time behind a desk. Its not bad, because periodically throughout the day I will hear the joyful sounds of children playing. These sounds are beautiful. So as soon as these sounds hit my ear I make my way outside.
Today was especially fun. The house mothers had organized a small track for the children to race around. As the children began to finish the adults began to take their turn. That’s when I came out.
Today happens to be my birthday so immediately I was volunteered to join in one of the races. It was so much fun. There were adult women and men doing their best to run around this track. At the end of every race everyone was laughing and congratulating each other. Babies, toddlers, young, middle aged, and older people were laughing together because of such a simple thing.
The greatest part of my move here have been the people. They are so welcoming and kind. Within the first week of my stay I completely feel like a part of this family, and it is this that makes a move across the world easy. Welcoming people who don’t really care where you came from, they just know that your here for the same reasons they are, and that’s all that matters.
