Wheel Barrel Water Boys

Once you leave the city, everything changes. The landscape is dotted with seemingly randomly placed homes made of concrete building blocks. These are basic shelters, almost always just a rectangle shaped structure with a dirt floor and no finish. There is no outer stucco here and residents do not fret over which color to paint their homes. Every one of the structures looks the same, only their ages and the atrophy that occurs over time distinguish one from another. Regardless, their residents are happy just to have the shelter and it is an important thing here in this culture.

Plumbing is not found here. So, even though families live in what appears to be a suburban setting, they must still fetch water from a local source. The government has installed hand-operated water pumps throughout the area, though, so what ends up happening is that children of all ages are sent with wheel barrels and containers to retrieve the family’s supply of water.
